At the heart of Shantala baby massage is the loving connection between the caregiver and the baby. Through nurturing touch, the caregiver conveys love, trust and security to the infant, strengthening the bond between them. The physical touch during the massage has a profound effect on the emotional well-being of the baby and the parents and improves the overall parent-child relationship.
Apart from the emotional benefits, Shantala baby massage offers numerous potential physical benefits for the baby. The gentle strokes and manipulation of the muscles promotes relaxation, reduces stress and improves sleep patterns. Plus, massage supports the development of the baby’s motor skills, body awareness and muscle tone.
In addition, stimulation of the baby’s skin during massage increases blood flow and improves circulation throughout the body. This has a particularly positive effect on the baby’s immune system and helps with the elimination of waste products by improving lymphatic circulation.
Shantala baby massage is an ancient and time-honoured practice that originated in India and has been passed down through generations of caregivers. The name “Shantala” is derived from a woman named Shantala who was observed massaging her baby by Dr Frédérick Leboyer, a French obstetrician and paediatrician, during a trip to Bengal in the 1970s. Dr Leboyer was deeply touched by the loving and caring way Shantala massaged her child and recognised the profound benefits she could offer both the baby and the parents.
The Ayurvedic baby massage is special and beneficial due to its alignment with the baby’s Ayurvedic type, the use of appropriate oils, and its ability to restore balance.
Through this massage, caregivers can deepen their understanding of their baby’s needs for more harmony and holistic health.
The practice of the massage is usually done on the mother’s lap, in a warm and soothing environment, using warm oils. It takes about 15-20 minutes and is followed by a relaxing bath. It is suitable for babies from the time the cord falls until crawling, although some parents choose to continue the practice over a longer period of time.
